13 oktober: Historisch Café in Amsterdam

Jan Dirk Snel interviewt mij een uur op woensdagavond 13 oktober in het Historisch Café om 21.00 uur, Prinsengracht 96. Om 20.00 uur wordt Dienke Hondius geïnterviewd over het geschiedenisonderwijs over de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

De natie is als een veeleisende vrouw: van haar liefhebbers eist ze volledige opoffering. Martelaarschap (shahada) is tegenwoordig een bekend begrip, leert het nieuws. Het is ook tamelijk nieuw. In zijn studie over het Koerdische nationalisme laat Mariwan Kanie zien dat het begrip pas na de Eerste Wereldoorlog een rol ging spelen. Het waren vooral dichters die de politieke liefde voor de natie, die met de eigen dood betaald werd, bezongen.

Martelaarschap is volgens Kanie volop een modern verschijnsel. Religie wordt geïndividualiseerd, getransformeerd en soms ook geseculariseerd. De Iraakse communistische partij noemt zich bijvoorbeeld trots de hizb al shuhada, de partij van de martelaren. Zowel de seculiere PKK als de Ansar al-Islam kennen hun zelfmoordmartelaren. Als islamisten tegenwoordig het martelaarschap (weer) prijzen, is dat vooral omdat ze het van seculiere groepen hebben overgenomen.

Promotie

Op 15 september ben ik in de aula van de Universiteit van Amsterdam gepromoveerd met het proefschrift Martelaarschap, tussen natie en religie: politieke liefde, poëzie en zelfopoffering in het Koerdisch nationalisme.

Radio-optreden samen met Joost Hilterman over Amerikaanse terugtrekking uit Irak.

Samen met Joost Hilterman treed Mariwan Kanie vandaag op bij de VPRO, Radio 1 om ongeveer 19.00 uur.

Het gaat over de gevolgen van de Amerikaanse terugtrekking uit Irak voor de interne toestand in Irak en de machtsverhoudingen in het Middenoosten.

Op 3 december gaf Mariwan Kanie een lezing bij het Max Planck Instituut in Göttingen, getiteld: "Martyrdom and Nationalism in Kurdish Poetry"

Martyrdom is a religious notion originating from the monotheistic religions, notably Christianity and Islam. Religious martyrdom means dying for God or for the belief. Nationalism rearticulates this readiness to death and transforms it to a radical form of national love; the self-sacrificing political love for the nation and the motherland. The Kurdish nationalism offers a unique opportunity to trace the development of the notion of political martyrdom and its secular rearticulation. The role of the Kurdish poetry is crucial in this process.

Mariwan Kanie comes originally from Iraqi Kurdistan. Since 1993 he lives and works in Holland. Recently he is writing a Doctoral thesis on martyrdom at the University of Amsterdam and teaches the intellectual history of Arab and Islamic world at the same university.
