The Kurdistan Democratic Party, led by Massuad Barzani, has withdrawn its lawsuit against both writers Aras Fatah and Mariwan Kanie, according to Khabat newspaper on Friday, the 7th January 2011. "The KDP is much greater than that occupying itself with these insignificant polemics," Barzani's press secretary stated in the KDP's organ Khabat (aka: Xebat) on Friday.

It was declared by Faysal Dabagh, Massuad Barzani's press adviser, on Friday that only yesterday, i.e. Thursday, Barzani was made aware of the lawsuit. The statement by Dabagh did not explain whether Barzani had been made aware of the other lawsuits which are still outstanding against free media and writers and whether the KDP regard these as "insignificant polemics" too – as claimed.

In a statement which has been posted in Kurdish by Sbeiy.com, both writers replied Barzani's press secretary's statement. Aras Fatah and Mariwan Kanie have declared in their statement: the explanation and excuse, which is given by Dabagh, is at a very low level and extremely unprofessional. Instead of admitting that the KDP made a mistake and that the president of the KRG wishes to rectify it; his press secretary states in a patronising manner that the KDP is much greater than occupying itself with these insignificant polemics.

We request from the KDP and president of the region to withdrew all their lawsuits and end this abnormal and non-democratic circumstances which has been created, the writers Aras Fatah and Mariwan Kanie elaborated in their sbeiy.com statement.

The withdrawal of the KDP lawsuit against the two writers triggered launching a campaign to withdraw all the outstanding lawsuits. To sign the campaign, please send your support to this email, which is posted by Hawlati website on Friday:
